The Potomac Suite
The Potomac Suite honors the long, winding, river that borders Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and Washington, DC. Meandering more than 400 miles, the Potomac eventually flows into the Chesapeake Bay. The Potomac Basin and its watershed encompass more than 5 million people, creating a history-rich area around what some call “America’s River.”
The Union’s largest army took its name from the river to reflect its importance. The Confederate Army crossed the Potomac several times in attempts to disrupt supply lines and to capture Washington, DC. General Robert E. Lee and his troops forded it in September, 1862, as they marched toward the battle of Antietam.
